Scientific objectives and research project
Background: The aquaculture sector faces numerous challenges due to environmental changes, including climate change, resource depletion, and biodiversity loss. There is increasing demand for sustainable aquaculture practices that minimize ecological impacts while maintaining productivity. Using agroecology—a holistic and environmentally friendly farming approach—within aquaculture ASACHA addresses sustainability challenges. Objective: The network aims to devise and implement aquaculture practices that align with agroecological principles. A key objective is to promote practices that support and enhance the ecosystem services provided by aquatic environments. Aquaculture systems adaptation to the impacts of climate change are crucial components of ASACHA's goals; improving efficiency in using natural resources, such as water and food web, ensures the sustainability of aquaculture operations; encouraging biodiversity within aquaculture systems to increase ecological resilience and sustainability. Engaging in multidisciplinary research and working with policymakers to foster sustainable aquaculture practices globally. The network aims to create a resilient aquaculture industry that can thrive amidst global environmental and economic changes by adopting innovative, eco-friendly practices.IRD units involved
