Objectifs scientifiques et projet de recherche
Pastoral food production systems provide key contributions to the livelihood of approx. 35 millions people in lndia, and constitute sustainable food production systems, particularly adapted to arid and semi-arid environments characterised by a high rainfall and vegetation cover variability . However, lndian pastoralism has failed to receive the sustained, academic engagement that parts of Africa, Latin America, Central Asia and the middle east have. The proposed GDRI aims at filling this gap by creating a network of researchers and practitioners working specifically on pastoralism in lndia. lt builds on existing occasionnai collaborations - particularly two conferences held in 2016 and 2019 - and gathers all the key research institutions and NGOs currently engaged with pastoralism in lndia . The participating individuals represent a set of expertises that spans from social sciences (anthropology, development studies, history, economics) to ecological sciences (rangelands ecology, botany) and animal sciences (veterinary and breeding specialists), dedicated at understanding contemporary evolutions of indian pastoral systems under diverse approaches . The proposed network will actas a platform to : i) foster exchanges and cross-fertilization between the involved research teams, ii) coordinate the production of syntheses, large-scale analyses and datasets to document the current situation and trends of pastoralists populations, and iii) train students and build curricula within the participating institutions, through the development of two courses and one field school. The GDRI will also be a basis for further proposai writing and fund raising.Unités IRD impliquées
