Created in 2010, IFAECI is an International Research Laboratory sponsored by CNRS, CONICET, IRD, and UBA. It involves seventy-three investigators whose expertise revolves around climate and weather, their extremes and variability, their ecological and societal impacts, as well as the way they can be modelled to propose future solutions and practical tools for societies. IFAECI scientific research therefore contributes to understanding the climate system and its impacts, from a regional to a global scale which is largely reflected in its scientific production, networks, and projects. In particular, the important IFAECI scientific production and the active participation of IFAECI members in international organisations such as IPCC, WMO, and WRCP reflects the positioning of IFAECI as a leader in climate and weather sciences.

IFAECI shines in various domains and has a substantial impact not only on science itself but also on societal and economic issues, as it participates in large efforts dealing with the impact and retroactions of climate change and weather variability on natural and modified ecosystems (forests, wetlands, drylands, glaciers, rivers, oceans), on rural and urban communities, on health (e.g., Covid-19) as well as on production issues (ranching, wind farms, marine resources). IFAECI is therefore a highly relevant climate laboratory at a regional and international level.

In the context of climate emergency, IFAECI has the potential to strengthen its position as a regional hub, connecting investigators and institutions, providing a high throughput and interdisciplinary analysis of climate and its impacts as well as producing shared knowledge and tools for academics, local communities, and stakeholders.
