Objectifs scientifiques et projet de recherche

At the end of the 2000’s, Viet Nam decided to reach high international standards of education and research by creating 4 leading universities. Among them, USTH – Viet Nam France University, based on an intergovernmental agreement between both countries, aims to develop research and education programs using state-of-the-art high technologies, with a focus on water and environmental sciences as well as satellite applications. Viet Nam is indeed a highly coastal country with densely populated low altitude delta areas (Red River in the North and Mekong in the South) submitted to a wide range of natural and anthropogenic hazard (typhoons, flooding, water pollution, sea level rise …) where key agriculture, fishing and tourism industries strongly rely on water resources and quality. LOTUS general scientific objective is to understand and monitor the functioning and variability of the transport and fate of water and associated matter in the atmosphere-continent-ocean coupled system in coastal regions of Viet Nam and South East Asia (SEA). Deltas are key regions of this system: they are at the interface between the continent and the ocean and submitted to a large range of natural and anthropogenic influences. Identifying and understanding the processes that control water and matter fluxes in those regions and their interactions with the oceanic and continental areas is therefore of primary importance. This constitutes a scientific but also methodological challenge: the sharing of tools and knowledge between scientific communities that focus respectively on oceanic and continental regions is still at its beginning. Our goal is therefore to focus on the continuum region that goes from the river estuary to the open ocean, by addressing three main questions: Which physical and biogeochemical processes control the transport and fate of water and matter through the river - estuary – coastal area – open ocean region? How do they interact? Which natural and anthropogenic factors are involved in the different scales of variability of this transport and fate? How can those processes and scales of variability be observed through in-situ and remote sensing observations and be represented through modeling. Impacts de la variabilité du climat et du changement climatique global sur le fonctionnement physique, chimique et écologique des océans Impact des pollutions de l’océan sur les écosystèmes hauturiers, côtiers et littoraux de la zone intertropicale.
